Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • Puff pastry sheets (ready-made)
  • Egg wash (1 beaten egg)

Optional Savory Additions

  • Parmesan or cheddar cheese, grated (optional, amount to preference)
  • Fresh or dried herbs (e.g., rosemary, thyme, basil)
  • Spices (e.g., paprika, chili flakes)
  • Fillings such as pesto, sun-dried tomatoes, crumbled feta, brie, goat cheese (amount to preference)

Optional Sweet Additions

  • Jam or fruit preserves (1-2 tablespoons per pastry)
  • Chocolate chips (small handful)
  • Cinnamon sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Thaw puff pastry sheets according to package instructions until cold but pliable. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking.
  2. Cut Out Star Shapes: On a lightly floured surface, unfold the puff pastry and use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out as many stars as possible, placing them close together to maximize dough usage.
  3. Add Fillings or Toppings: For savory stars, spread a thin layer of your chosen filling on one star and place another star on top to form a sandwich. For sweet stars, add a spoonful of jam or sprinkle chocolate chips before enclosing with another star.
  4. Brush with Egg Wash: Lightly beat an egg and generously brush each star with the egg wash to achieve a glossy, golden finish after baking.
  5. Bake Until Golden: Place stars on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Keep the dough cold for better handling and flakier results; chill again if it softens too much.
  • Use parchment paper when baking to prevent sticking and simplify cleanup.
  • Avoid overfilling the stars to prevent sogginess and leaking during baking.
  • Maintain uniform dough thickness for even cooking and puffing.
  • Let the dough rest a few minutes if it becomes too soft to better maintain star shape.
  • Optional: Brush stars with egg wash twice—once before baking and again halfway through—for extra shine and color.
