Crispy Mozzarella Balls

Crispy Mozzarella Balls are a quick and easy snack featuring a golden, crunchy exterior and a gooey, melty mozzarella cheese center. Perfect as an appetizer or casual treat, these bite-sized delights offer a perfect balance of texture and flavor, customizable with herbs and spices, and suitable for various dietary preferences including gluten-free options.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • Mozzarella Cheese Balls – about 20 small balls (1 oz each)
  • All-Purpose Flour – 1 cup (or gluten-free flour alternative for gluten-free version)
  • Eggs – 2 large, whisked
  • Bread Crumbs – 2 cups (use gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed gluten-free crackers for gluten-free)
  • Italian Seasoning – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black Pepper – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Vegetable Oil – enough for deep frying (about 2-3 cups)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cheese Balls: Pat the mozzarella balls dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. If using larger mozzarella chunks, shape them into bite-sized balls to ensure even cooking.
  2. Set Up Your Breading Station: Arrange three shallow bowls: one with all-purpose flour, the second with whisked eggs, and the third with breadcrumbs mixed with Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Coat the Mozzarella Balls: Roll each ball first in the flour, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat thoroughly with the seasoned breadcrumbs. For extra crunch, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating one more time.
  4. Freeze Before Frying: Place the breaded mozzarella balls on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes to prevent cheese from leaking when fried.
  5. Fry to Golden Perfection: Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the balls in batches for 1-2 minutes until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally for even coloring.
  6. Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried balls to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Let cool slightly before serving to enjoy the perfect balance of gooey inside and crispy outside.

Notes

  • Freeze breaded balls before frying to prevent cheese leakage.
  • Maintain oil temperature between 350-360°F to ensure crispiness without greasiness.
  • Double coating with egg and breadcrumbs adds extra crunch.
  • Use fresh mozzarella for the best melt and stretch.
  • Drain on paper towels to keep the coating crisp and remove excess oil.
  • Use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version.
  • Bake at 400°F for 10-12 minutes as a lighter alternative to frying.
