Baked Shrimp Toast

Baked Shrimp Toast

Baked Shrimp Toast is a crispy, savory appetizer featuring a creamy shrimp topping spread on toasted bread and baked to golden perfection. This lighter, healthier alternative to traditional fried shrimp toast offers a delightful crunch and rich seafood flavor, perfect for quick snacks, entertaining guests, or creative variations to suit your taste.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp Mixture

  • Fresh or thawed shrimp, peeled and deveined, finely chopped (about 8 oz)
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 green onions, finely minced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Optional seasonings: minced chili peppers or hot sauce for spice, fresh cilantro, parsley or basil for herbs, hoisin sauce or grated ginger for Asian fusion

Bread Base

  • White sandwich bread or baguette slices, crust trimmed and cut into 2-3 inch rectangles or triangles (8-12 pieces)

Toppings and Finishing

  • Sesame seeds for sprinkling
  • Butter or oil for lightly brushing the bread (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan or mozzarella cheese for cheesy variation (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Shrimp Mixture: Finely chop the peeled and deveined shrimp, then combine it with mayonnaise, minced green onions, minced garlic, soy sauce, and any desired seasonings such as chili peppers, herbs, or hoisin sauce. Mix until creamy yet able to hold shape for spreading.
  2. Cut and Prep the Bread: Trim the crusts off the bread and slice into bite-sized rectangles or triangles about 2-3 inches wide. Optionally, lightly brush one side of each bread piece with melted butter or oil to enhance crispiness after baking.
  3. Assemble the Toasts: Spread the shrimp mixture generously onto the unbuttered side of each piece of bread, pressing gently to adhere. Sprinkle sesame seeds evenly on top to add texture and a nutty flavor.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Arrange the prepared toasts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 12-15 minutes or until the shrimp topping turns golden and the edges of the bread are crispy.
  5. Serve Warm: Remove the shrimp toasts from the oven and let them cool briefly before serving, allowing the topping to set and the toast to remain crunchy.

Notes

  • Finely chop shrimp to help the topping hold together and ensure an even texture.
  • Don’t overload the bread with shrimp mixture to prevent sogginess and uneven baking.
  • Use fresh bread for best crispiness, though slightly stale bread can also work.
  • Monitor baking time closely as ovens vary to avoid burning.
  • Customize seasonings like garlic, soy sauce, and herbs to suit your taste preferences.
